I foolishly decided to visit Mom for a good moping. Of course, she wasn't having it. Told me to suck it up and get back in the saddle, as any good mother does. So instead of moping, I found myself listening to her prompts on what I should write about.
"Wizards!" she'd say. "Harry Potter, Mom." I'd reply. "Ooh, how about vampires?" "Twilight..." After a long while of this back and forth, she said, "Well, how about mermaids?" It made me pause. I couldn't recall any books about mermaids, (turns out there are quite a few, something I wouldn't discover until later), and the only big story that came to mind was Disney's The Little Mermaid. Mom knew she had me then. "What about mermaids?" she prompted again. "Mermaids are for girls," was the only thing I could think to reply with. "Guys don't want to read about mermaids. They're not cool enough." And then Mom said something I'll never forget. "Find a way to make them cool." Turns out Mom knows me pretty well. Who knew, right? Guess all I needed was a challenge. A huge shock to be sure for any of you who've ever met me. Anyway, there is more to this story, but I think it's better told later, closer to the book's release. Yes, I'm evil for making you wait longer, I know. It'll be worth it though. Trust me. In the meantime, check out my site and be sure to sign up on my Contact page so I can keep you updated with any Salted related news. I have a fair number of interesting QA's coming up, and I'll be divulging things I've learned along the way. I might even give away some advanced review copies to the three of you reading this post. Until next time! :-)
